Before 1969 the league was comprised of only one division and the winner of that league (highest winning pct.) would automatically win the American League Pennant and then face the winner of the National League Pennant in the World Series.
After 1969 the league split into two divisions having each of these divisional winners play each other in the American League Championship Series
(ALCS) and then go on to face the NLCS for the World Series.
