After 1969 the league split into two divisions having each of these divisional winners play each other in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) and then go on to face the ALCS for the World Series.
Before 1969 the league was comprised of only one division and the winner of that league (highest winning pct.) would automatically win the National League Pennant and then face the winner of the American League Pennant in the World Series.
